Gaston Casimir SAINT-PIERRE was a student of Léon Cogniet and Charles Jalabert at the Ecole des Beaux-Art in Paris. His family having settled in Oran, he travels throughout the Maghreb. Fascinated by the colors and customs of the Orient, he painted the Jewish communities of Algeria and distinguished himself by his female portraits in local costume.
The original painting was sold at Gros & Delettrez, June 14, 2004, n°111, under the title "Jeune femme ottomane", oil on canvas signed in the lower left corner, (130 x 77,5 cm).
