COGOLIN carpet (France), mid 20th century
Dimensions : 349 x 232cm.
Technical characteristics : wool velvet on cotton foundation.
Three crenellated rhomboid medallions, brick and sky, with hearts of stylized entomological forms surrounded by flowers, small animals and other symbols, connected by animal ivory boxes, are enthroned on an oblong hexagonal marine field, serrated, covered with a variegated sowing of fauna, flora and stylized symbols typical of Caucasian carpets. Four spandrels with ornate honeycomb latticework complete the decoration. Two ivory counter borders with cherry ribbons enclose the main raspberry with multicolored geometric floral compositions, interspersed with chamarré birds and small animals. Two counter borders with garlands and two-tone highlights complete the carpet. Beautiful Caucasian decoration for this French carpet.
