CHODOR ENSI carpet (Central Asia), late 19th century
Dimensions : 151 x 131cm.
Technical characteristics : Wool velvet on wool foundation.
The star of this Ensi carpet is the central brick cross, vegetalized, crenellated and serrated, stylized tree of life. It lies on a brick field with rows of small blue flowering stems. The frame is composed of a brick border with a succession of starry crosses, supplanted by stylized floral botehs, on the left side. It is flanked by two ivory counter-borders with series of trophies, double botehs and small diamond-shaped boxes. Two reserves, an upper one with geometric columns and a lower one with trees of life in inverted quincunx and columns of plant stems in polychrome surround the whole. Magnificent example of Hatchlou carpet (From the Armenian Khatch-cross).
