LÊ PHÔ (1907-2001) "Young woman with a Vietnamese dress" Gouache and ink on silk pasted on paper. Signed Lepho at the top with red stamp on the right and black ink and black caratères above, early 1940s. With its certificate of Mr Alain Le Kim son of the artist. 35 x 28 cm Biography: Le Pho (1907-2001) Born in HA Dong. He studied in Hanoi at the Indochina School of Fine Arts in 1930. Then he went to the colonial exhibition with the painter Victor Tardieu in 1931. He visited Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. Then he stayed in Beijing in 1934 where he studied traditional Chinese painting. He began to paint on silk, then moved on to oil painting. It is thus at the beginning of his career that he realized this painting on silk of this young peasant girl holding branches of cotton flowers. Cotton was cultivated by the natives who sowed it on the banks of rivers, in places periodically covered by floods that left a fertilizing silt. In 1890, the first cotton mill of the Meiffre-Cousins et. Cie, with 10.732 spindles and 170 workers. Subsequently, the cotton industry made rapid progress and was exploited by the Tonkin Cotton Company which was created in 1900 by Anthyme Dupré (1865-1940). This cotton cultivation among farmers will develop during the XXth century.
