BASSETTL / HALF BASS, GERMANY PROBABLY SAXONY / POSSIBLY BOHEMIA, C. 1700
The very rare, four-stringed instrument with spruce top is playable (one string is broken). The instrument has been restored several times. There is a cross brace under the bridge, which is connected to the back by two tuning pins. On the inside of the top, a kind of middle rib can still be seen. The bassettl is a link between the cello, viola da gamba and double bass and was used until the Viennese classical period.
The instrument was restored by Johannes Loescher, Cologne.
