Hughes Telegraph h. 1866-1914
Placed on a Neo-Gothic style cast iron table.
Manufactured by Siemens & Haiske in Germany, it is the first telegraph to print text on paper tape.
With a keyboard similar to that of a piano, each key was equivalent to a letter on the printer located where the message was received.
The British physicist David Edward Hughes, who emigrated to the United States, invented this successful telegraph in 1855. With his invention, text could be printed directly without having to have an alphabetic code. He could send messages of up to 30 words per minute. It was mainly used for underground cable routes between Great Britain and Europe.
There are specimens in various museums around the world. In Spain, the Torres Quevedo Museum of the School of Civil, Canal and Port Engineers has one similar to this one.
