Moba statue, Togo
Wood
H. 72,5 cm
The first Moba statues to reach Europe were kept by German museums, notably the Museum für Völkerkunde in Hamburg and Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1990, in Paris, the gallery owner Pierre Robin contributed to their revelation, Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert were the most ardent collectors, looking for a new singularity of movement and expression in each of them.
Inscribed in an eroded wood, giving it this archaic allure. The body is a material in its own right. The material and time have shaped this being, with forms both raw and poetic. From the small size signified by an almost square block, springs the long slender abdomen, slightly bent, giving it a delicate sway. The bust is more imposing, more massive, framed by fine arms, short asymmetrical accentuating the "shifted" movement.
