JIMENA KATO (Lima, 1979). Untitled. Painting on glass. Size: 32 x 21 cm. Born in Lima, Jimena Kato studied painting and academic drawing at the Escuela de Arte Corriente Alterna and photography at the Instituto Gaudí (today Centro de la Imagen). She then moved to Europe, where she studied Fine Arts at ESADMM in Marseille (France) and graduated in sculpture and video with a Post-diploma in Intermedia Art at Sint-Lukas Hogeschool in Brussels (Belgium). In those years he formed the Threeplusone Collective with three other artists and worked in parallel as assistant to artists Pierre Bismuth and Lionel Esteve. Throughout her career as an artist, she has shown her work in group and solo exhibitions in different cultural centres, galleries and alternative spaces in Madrid, Santander, Poznan, Warsaw, Lima, Bogotá, Hasselt, Brussels, Paris and Philadelphia among others. Jimena Kato sees sculpture as a medium in which to investigate constructive and architectural archetypes. She combines industrial materials (such as the cement block in our work) with other handmade materials (in this case, inflatable balloons), a duality and discordance of textures, measurements and proportions that surprises the viewer in an unprecedented way.
