Venus at the Forges of Vulcan, ca. 1700
Fan leaf in skin, painted with gouache Vulcan forges the arrows that will arm Aeneas. Venus cools them down before entrusting them to Love whose arrow pierces Aeneas' armor to touch his heart. The composition is based on the work of Antoine Coypel (1661-1722) "Venus at the forges of Lemnos".
