MARIUS ERNEST SABINO, France, ca.1930. Art Deco vase. Moulded and carved glass. Signed "Sabino, France". Measures: 18 x 18 cm. Of Sicilian origin, Marius Ernest Sabino (1878-1961) trained at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris, where he was particularly interested in the new applications of glass. After the First World War, after returning from the front, he founded his own glassworks. Interested in both the artistic and technical aspects of glass production, he developed innovative techniques in both construction and decoration, producing mainly moulded pieces with relief decorations. From the 1920s onwards he produced both official commissions and vases and other ornamental pieces, where his quality as a sculptor is evident. Sabino also exhibited his work at the Paris Salons and a large illuminated column at the Universal Exhibition of 1937. After the Second World War, Marius Sabino continued to run the factory, although he stopped making new designs.
