MARGARITA SANS I JORDI (Barcelona, 1911-2006). "Female bust". Ceramic. Signed. Size: 24 x 13 x 10 cm; 32 x 16 x 12 x 12 cm (base). The sculptor Margarita Sans i Jordi was a disciple of Àngels Ferrant and Josep Llimona. She presented her first exhibition in Barcelona (1932). Having won the Conde de Cartagena scholarship in Madrid (1936), she went to Paris, where she received lessons from C. Despiau. He exhibited in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, etc. His style can be defined as a schematization of Limonian work. He particularly cultivated the female nude and religious sculpture. In 1942, he made sculptures of the figures of Abbot Oliva and Sant Benet, destined to preside over the Chapter House of the Monastery of Montserrat, and years later, in 1954, and also for the Monastery, the monumental group of the Way of the Cross (Sant Benet, station of the Way of the Cross in Montserrat). He also sculpted two carvings for the Convalescent Home in Madrid and a sculptural group for a cemetery in Madrid. In 1956, she sculpted the Mystery of Jesus, which takes part in the Good Friday procession in Sitges. Works by Margarida Sans are kept in the MNAC and the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, as well as in collections in New York and Paris.
