ÉMILE GALLÉ (Nancy, France, 1846 - 1904).
Art Nouveau side table.
Wood with marquetry.
Measurements: 74 x 47 x 46 cm.
Side table in Art Nouveau style, with a structure defined by sinuous and moving forms typical of this language. The top is marked with stylised vegetal bouquets of great naturalism combining fruit woods, following the classic procedure. The feet of the upper body are turned, with fine mouldings, and the base is open, carved and fretworked in profile, alternating concave and convex meanders. The lower body has cabriole feet and openwork shoulders.
The masterful designer Émile Gallé took over his father's factory in 1874 and soon achieved great international success, winning prizes at international exhibitions and selling works to important collections and museums. Today, pieces made by Émile Gallé can be seen in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the Brohan Museum in Berlin and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among many others.
