Influenced by Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquity, Jean-Léon Gérôme created this charming group Bacchante à la grappe, also called Bacchante et l'Amour, in 1892. For his sculptures, the artist often drew inspiration from his Painted Works, in which he repeatedly explored the theme of a woman accompanied by a child in a natural, antique landscape. Here we recognize the composition of a young woman holding a bunch of grapes and leaning on a thyrse on which a child is climbing in The Bacchante painted in 1873. The model Bacchante with a bunch of grapes was produced in three dimensions in gilded bronze by the founder Siot-Decauville.
