Paggi spent the 1580s in Pisa, then in Florence, where he was enrolled at the Accademia del Disegno in 1583, which
which explains the Tuscan component of the upper part of the composition, marked by Jacopo da Empoli.
He returned to his native Genoa in 1590, where he received numerous commissions for large altarpieces.
The profile of St. Catherine on the right can be compared with the almost identical one in the "Mystical Wedding of St. Catherine" (1590).

A preparatory drawing for our painting was sold in Zürich (Koller) on October 10, 2021, n°3409. If
the Virgin and the child are similar, the holy bishops are naked and their hierarchical rank is only evoked by the mitres
