This is one of the study versions in reduced model for the character of the wife where we notice that compared to the final state
definitive state Charles DESPIAU represents her here without her baby and the chest a little
more generous.
It is Jeanne KAMIENSKA, sister-in-law of the French painter, draughtsman, lithographer and illustrator Berthold MAHN (1881-1975) who posed for the young woman on the right
posed for the young woman on the right of the monument in the Square du Bourg-neuf.
She is caught between the memory and the future compared to the old woman on the right of the monument who is mourning her son who died for
France.
The young woman remains confident and protects her child.
