GROLLIER DE SERVIÈRE (Gaspard). Recueil d'ouvrages curieux de mathematique et de mecanique, ou Description du cabinet de Monsieur Grollier de Serviere. Lyon, David Forey, 1719. In-4, fawn calf, cold fillet, spine decorated (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION OF THIS BEAUTIFUL BOOK in which the author describes the cabinet of curiosities of his uncle Nicolas Grollier de Servière (1596-1689), descendant of the famous bibliophile Jean Grolier. Illustration engraved on copperplate comprising 85 plates representing different machines, eccentrics, clocks, etc. One of them is anchored to the front cover. One of them is anchored in the imagination of bibliophiles: it represents a library desk "very convenient for the people of study", which allows them "without changing place & without moving of [his] armchair, [to] read successively several books one after the other". The plates are numbered from 1 to 88, but plates 39, 48 and 76 are missing. Some stains, light freckling. Small remnants of red paper stuck on the plate of the lame chair (pl. LXXXVI). Tear without missing 2 plates (n°XXII and XXIII). Binding restored (corners, headpieces, hinges and nerves), scuffing on the boards.
