Plantae lignosae Imperii Austriaci. Austria's woody plants. A floristic treatment of all trees, shrubs and semi-shrubs growing wild or frequently cultivated in the Austrian Empire, based on exact consideration of the characteristics of the foliage. Vienna, Verlag der K.K. Hof- u. Staatsdruckerei 1864. folio. XXVIII (1), 524 pp, 1 leaf with 1640 natural self-prints on 80 plates (partly repeated in the text). Hln. d. Zt. with gilt spine and cover titles. (old restored corners, rubbed). Fischer 78, Nissen BBI 1555, Pritzel 7241 - First and only edition. - "The 1640 leaf impressions included with this work represent, with few exceptions, all the species described here. This almost absolute completeness, which is so difficult to achieve, is due to the author's use of public and private collections, which he was allowed to use with great liberality ... As for the method of execution of the prints, it is very simplified according to a newer method practiced in the Imperial and Royal Court Printing Office and gives positive images produced by transfer and etching on zinc, printed with the letterpress" (Preface). - Alois Pokorny, like Ettingshausen, was director of the Vienna State Printing Office. Both of them had a series of works with illustrations produced in natural self-printing according to the Auers process, which they continued to perfect. - Plate 80 printed with 2 scales on Japanese paper. - Pre-title with crease marks and a little browned, otherwise a good clean copy.
