Germ. Chemist, founder of agricultural chemistry (1803-1873). Handwritten manuscript (fragment) of his work: " Die Thierchemie oder die organische Chemie in ihrer Anwendung auf Physiologie und Pathologie". Total. 60 fol., partly double-page and written on both sides. Without date (ca. 1846/47). Unbound. 8°. Loose in mod. Ldr. album between w. Bll. Extensive fragment of the manuscript, presumably for the 3rd revised and enlarged edition, Brunswick 1847 (Paoloni 494). - Liebig had first revised his "Organic Chemistry" for the third edition of 1846 (Paoloni II462), especially the second part, and had now based his more general observations of the previous editions on scientific investigations. Comparisons with the 3rd Ausgage show that the present manuscript includes a large part of chapters 18-22 as well as almost the complete 2nd part "The Metamorphosis of Formations - The Method". However, the present fragment has considerably more text, especially for the 2nd part, in the chapters 18-22 there are only minor word or sentence differences, so that it can be concluded that the manuscript formed the printing template for the 3rd revised edition of 1847, This conclusion is corroborated by the fact that the back of one sheet is marked "Gießen 1846". - Due to an earlier enclosed envelope with gift note, it was assumed at that time that Liebig gave the manuscript to his student Eben Norton Horsford (1818-1893), who became the first professor of chemistry at Harvard in 1847 (Provenance: Auktionshaus Dörling, 1992, Auktion 144, Nr. 1147). - With numerous deletions, additions, paste-overs, etc., in very good condition. - An extensive original manuscript of Liebig from one of his most important works. - Comprehensive manuscripts by Liebig are very rare. (1737). D
