SCHOOL OF RUBENS Pierre-Paul (1577-1640). Circa 1670. "The Triumph of the Eucharist over Idolatry". Large oil on canvas executed after a tapestry model by RUBENS exhibited in the Prado Museum. About 1625. Frame of the period cut. H.110 L.169.Literature: These tapestry cartoons were made for the monastery of Descalzas in Madrid and our painting corresponds to one of the 6 panels exhibited in the Prado Museum. Our painting presents a very high technical and compositional level. It is strong in detail both in the sculptural strength of each figure and in the expression in the faces and in the representations. History: Around 1625, the Infanta Isabella, Clara, Eugenia Governor of the Spanish Netherlands commissioned Rubens to design a series of 20 tapestries for the monastery of Descalzas Reales where they are all preserved. All of these studies were painted on panels and deal with the theme of the Eucharist. This is the main dogma of Catholicism that the Infanta defended. Rubens made several preparatory sketches for this series, which are among the best in his work and reveal his expressiveness and vitality.
