ARAPESH CLUB, MOUTH OF THE RAMU, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Palm wood
H. 129,5 cm
An ancient flat lanceolate weapon, decorated with engraved motifs including two heads of ancestors, almond-shaped eyes and an arrow nose, enclosed in a triangular face.
These long, thin clubs have often been interpreted as swords. They were actually used by women who used them in disputes about a man or when they wanted to avenge an affront.
