ARCHER SHIELD, SOGERAM RIVER, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
H. 45,5 cm
Provenance :
Galerie Renaud Vanuxem (Paris)
Beautiful archer's shield that was positioned at chest level, supported by a rope tied around the neck. There are three holes, one of which has been badly worn by the passage of the rope. The shield is heart-shaped, decorated on one side with a red border. Beautiful finely scabbed material.
In their book Shields of Melanesia, Harry Beran and Barry Craig tell us on p.55 that a few rare heart-shaped shields of this type have been collected in the village of Bagasin, near Usino, about 30 km west of Astrolabe Bay, at the headwaters of the Sogeram River, a tributary of the Ramu River.
