IATMUL STATUE, MIDDLE SEPIK, PAPUA NEW GUINEA Wood, pigments H. 83 cm Provenance : Private collection (Nice) Representing a standing male figure, arms along the body, hands placed on the hips. The chest and waist are adorned with engraved interlacing. The face is covered with ceremonial motifs painted in white and ochre. The body is covered with horizontal bands painted with ochre pigments. The eyes are encrusted with cowries. The pointed nose has widely dilated nostrils. A crocodile's head is sculpted in the back of the character.
