Fragments of red silk velvet on a cream-colored ground. The small silk fragment (w. 45.5 X 22 cm) probably originally part of an upholstery, the others possibly parts of liturgical robes. The largest (76 X 52 cm) decorated with large plant motif; the three banded fragments, originally probably placed on the hems of robes, embroidered with gold thread and decorated with carmine red flowers. The pair derived from the same fabric (the larger strip measures 64 X h.11 cm); the last, with floral decoration within panels measures 65 X h. 11.5 cm. The Italian manufacture of these Renaissance textiles is largely influenced by coeval Ottoman textile manufacture. Venice and Istanbul had in fact woven a close commercial relationship that enabled Venetian (but also Florentine) master weavers to rework exquisitely Ottoman decorative motifs that, by virtue of their preciousness, then found a place in princely wardrobes and liturgical vestments.
