Provenance:
Mansi-Orsetti Collection, from a label on the stretcher.
A student of Largillière, François Rivière undertook a trip to the Orient, staying in Smyrna and Aleppo between 1697 and 1699. The Pitti Palace preserves a set of oriental scenes stylistically close to the work proposed here. François Rivière and Giovanni Camillo Sagrestani (1660-1731), with whom he is sometimes confused, competed at the beginning of the 18th century for the distribution of these "turqueries" to a clientele eager for exoticism
