Saint Scholastica (?) in limestone sculpted in the round and polychromed. Standing, the saint holds an open book in her right hand and grasps a few pages with her other hand; her face has youthful features with almond-shaped eyes strongly hemmed and a fleshy mouth sketching a smile; it is surrounded by a wimple and framed by an empesé rectangular veil whose rigidity is maintained by a pin on the top of the head and two others on the sides; the nun wears a dress with wide sleeves and an open cloak.
Bourbonnais ?, first third of the 15th century
Height: 63.5 cm (very slight accidents, polychromatic changes)
Provenance:
Sale Paris Hôtel Drouot, Me Le Fur, November 23, 2021, lot 178 (given as medieval style)
The red color of the mantle seems to be of a later period and does not correspond to any nun's habit. The habit and veil were most certainly entirely black, as shown by the remains of polychromy still visible. It could therefore be a saint of the Benedictine order like Scholastica holding the open book of her Rule.
