Cleopatra
Oil on canvas
Signed upper right
163 x 133 cm
The painter has represented the moment before Cleopatra "s death.
Ancient sources generally agree that the Egyptian queen, in her desire to be buried alongside Antony, offered herself to the bite of a snake. The versions diverge however on the part of the body exposed, the arm or the left breast (V. Boudon-Millot Véronique, "Du nouveau sur la mort de Cléopâtre : au croisement de l "histoire des textes et de l "histoire de l "art", Revue des Études Grecques, T. 128-2, July-December 2015, pp. 331-353).
The painting is presented in an orientalizing wood and gilded stucco frame whose border evokes kufic script.
