HANGER AT THE URANIA MUSEUM About 1860 Carrara marble; gilt bronze; enamel and glass H. 80 cm ; W. 362 cm ; D. 32 cm The dial, surrounded by a laurel wreath, emerges from the clouds. It is crowned by two putti sculpted in the round crowning Urania. The muse, leaning on a book, is accompanied by the terrestrial globe girded by a band decorated with the twelve signs of the zodiac. Other putti are depicted in bas-relief, on the gilded bronze plates that adorn the base. They immolate on altars and play various musical instruments. The so-called "Uranie" clocks, such as those designed by Pierre-Antoine Foullet around 1760 (fig. 1), were very successful until the middle of the 19th century. Urania, muse of Astronomy, is a figure of Time.
