Provenance Private collection, Paris Literal translation of the certificate of Dr. Klaus Ertz: "I know the original. After a thorough study, convinced that it is by the Flemish painter Adriaen Van Stalbemt, born 1582 - died 1662. Painted in Antwerp in the 1620s. The condition of this painting can be described as very good. Although the landscapes of his vast Work (about 330 paintings that are known to me so far) come from the art of mainly models: Adam Els, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Paul Bril. Adriaen Van Stalbemt is both a landscape painter as well as a figure painter. The artist being one of the few painters of his time to master several painting genres. A motif of houses that appears again and again in his colorful landscapes is the row of houses on the right side of the picture and the extremely typical giant trees with their tufts of nervous leaves at the edge of the frame on the left. In this small wooden panel he not only painted his realistic figures in the foreground, but also placed them deep in the background of the landscape, so that the viewer is interested in tracing every detail with a magnifying glass. The motif of horse-drawn covered wagons loaded with figures was common on country roads in his time. They came from or went to the market, like the horse-drawn cart loaded with sacks and jugs on the left behind the covered wagon. The artist's function as a documenter of his time is reliable in such motifs... Dr. Klaus Ertz February 2, 2021
