The Archdiocese of Barquisimeto is a diocese of Venezuela (93 parishes). The creation of this archdiocese was a bit atypical in that it was first created civilly by a law passed by Congress in 1847 that allowed for the legalisation of the diocese.
Congress in 1847, which allowed for legislation in matters of ecclesiastical heritage. It would take many years for the Holy See to confirm the creation of this diocese. In 1861, the Congregation for Bishops prepared everything concerning the canonical erection.
The bull "Ad Universam Agri Domini Curam" was issued on March 7, 1863 by Pope Pius IX, erecting the new diocese and establishing the parish church of San Francisco as its cathedral. The bishop of
Guevara, proceeds with the erection and declares Our Lady of Mount Carmel the titular of the cathedral.
