[HERALD]. [NETHERLANDS]. [BELGIUM]. Armorial genealogy of Lamoral d'Egmont, Prince of Gavre Painted coat of arms, legends in ink, document on parchment Belgium, Hainaut (?), Brussels (?), late 16th or early 17th century Dimensions : 316 x 533 mm Document folded in two, very good condition. Dull spine. Beautiful armorial genealogy for one of the important families of the Netherlands and Flanders. Lamoral d "Egmont, prince of Gavre, was born in Lahamaide in Hainaut and died beheaded in Brussels in 1568. He was born into one of the richest and most noble families of the Habsburg Netherlands, the house of Egmont. He was the son of Jean IV d "Egmont (1499- 1528), who died in Ferrara, and of Françoise de Luxembourg-Fiennes (died in 1557). He defeated the French at the battles of Saint-Quentin and Gravelines (1557-1558) and became governor of Flanders and Artois and a member of the Dutch Council of State. A few years later, he was a victim of the events of 1566-1567 (revolt of the Gueux and iconoclastic crisis). At the beginning of the Dutch uprising against Philip II, Lamoral d "Egmont was arrested on the orders of the Duke of Alba, as well as the Count of Hornes: he was tried and sentenced to death. The execution of the two men in June 1568 on the Grand-Place of Brussels was a key event in the uprising of the Netherlands against Philip II, which would lead to the independence of the United Provinces. Egmond or Egmont was an ancient and illustrious family of the Netherlands, whose chiefs were avoués of the abbey of Egmond (today in Holland) and avoués of the Counts of Holland. The origin of this Dutch family lies in the fact that the members of the house acted as guardians and thus protectors of the abbey of Egmond. The armorial genealogy goes back four generations before Lamoral d "Egmont, and thus to the 15th century with the marriage of Jan d "Egmond (died in 1451) to Mary of Arckel, heiress of Gelderland.
