Mit Keyserlicher Freyheit in sedis Iaren nit nachzetrucken In German, illuminated manuscript on paper Germany, 17th century With numerous coats of arms and drawings of knights (partly in color, gouache and watercolor) folio, 210 ff. preceded by 5 ff. of paper endpapers, followed by 9 ff. of blank paper, written in Roman letters in dark brown ink, text inscribed for some leaves in a frame of double red fillets. Bound in full stiff vellum, smooth spine, binding damaged, parchment on spine lifting at head and tail, stains on boards. Some leaves detaching from the seam (for example the first sheets of endpapers), paper fragile in places, some tears to the paper, freckles and moisture stains on some leaves (margins); some shields left blank (unfinished); several coats of arms and heraldic compositions or knights left in black, drawn in pencil and lead, not colored, suggesting that the work is unfinished. Size of the leaves : 250 x 394 mm Size of the binding : 255 x 400 mm. Fascinating manuscript, a copy of Georg Rüxner's "Turnierbuch", with numerous coats of arms and drawings that do not appear in the sixteenth editions of the work. These coats of arms and drawings are unique to this manuscript. Georg Rüxner's work on the beginnings and origins of tournaments in Germany was first printed in Siemern by Hieronymus Rodler in 1532 [see copy Jena, Thuringer Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek]. The present manuscript takes over the preface of this work but adds leaves with coats of arms which are not present in the edition. It is also to be compared with the later editions of the Book of Rüxner's Book of Tournaments, especially the Frankfurt edition, Georg Raben, Sigmund Feyerabend, Simon Hütter, 1566. In fact, it is based on a later edition (see p. 30), that of Frankfurt, 1578/1579. Complete record on request.
