[HERALD]. [BELGIUM]. Painted armorial for families and cities of the principality of Liege In French, illuminated manuscript on paper Belgium, late 17th century 44 ff. (including 3 leaves of tables: ff. 27-29v; last blank leaf; first leaf with pen tests), mounted on modern tabs for binding, manuscript in sheets, unbound. With 287 blazons drawn in ink and watercolor (some unfinished) and one leaf (older, late 16th c. ?) containing 24 painted blazons of cities (Liège, Horne, Huy, Dinant, Fosses...). Size of the leaves without the tab : 185 x 284 mm (a shorter leaf with the coats of arms of the cities : 165 x 290 mm.) These sheets contain coats of arms to be attached to families and cities of Wallonia, in particular Huy, Horne, Liège. They seem to come from different armorials, the first sheets (ff. 2-12v) offering plates of coats of arms grouped by 6 or by 4 with mentions : " Les quatre quartiers de Monsieur Jean Seraing de Salloigne... " (fol. 3v) ; " Les quatre quartiers de Monsieur Kettinio... ". (fol. 7v, with a few dates including a late one of "1657" (fol. 3). The following leaves (ff. 13-26v) also show coats of arms, usually 4 per page, but are made by a different hand (coats of arms of Brekt, Dussen, Barlaymont, Hosdain, Seraing, Licques, Wittim etc.). The following leaves (ff. 30-35v) are again by another hand (coats of arms of Tibermont, Hylle, Bremurwalt, Walthuyser, Spreng etc., some unfinished). Finally a fourth part (ff. 36-43v), by another hand with several additions (arms of Perilheux, Parfondri, Collet, Leonard, Gossuart, Pasquotz etc.). One will note on fol. 39 the blazon captioned: "Jean Pierre Germain inspector general of the receptes of His Catholic Majesty in the province of Luxembourg and its principal receiver in St Vith" (hand of the XVIIIth century). An older sheet 44 (16th century or early 17th century?) contains a series of 24 painted coats of arms for the cities of Wallonia, beginning with Liège, Horne, Huy, Dinant, Waremme, Tongeren and others. This leaflet seems to come from a smaller work.
