Her first series dealing explicitly with fashion, commissioned by boutique owner Dianne Benson in 1983 for publication in Interview magazine, was followed in 1984 by a series of photographs commissioned by designer Dorothée Bis for Vogue France. The brand Dorothée Bis, is known for its cheerful and colorful clothes, but Sherman dresses horrible shrews, with excessive makeup. Result, the photos will not be retained.
No matter, she is now one of the most important artists on the world stage.
"This disturbing cruelty evokes the implicit violence that emanates from many fashion photographs.
