FRIBOURG.
Drawing entitled "Plan des villes et châteaux de Fribourg". 1814 33 x 26.2 cm, black ink and pen with watercolor highlights, on laid paper. MASTER PLAN OF VAUBAN'S FORTIFICATIONS protecting the city. Freiburg, now Freiburg-im-Breisgau in Germany, had been French from 1677 to 1697 (when Vauban intervened) and then from 1799 to 1806 before being attached to the Grand Duchy of Baden - it was Baden when the present drawing was made.
The fortifications of Freiburg are a little-known contribution of Vauban, who was dispatched to the site by Louis XIV when the Treaty of Nijmegen gave the city to France in 1679.
Situated on the edge of the Black Forest, the map of which even indicates the way, in the Land of Baden, it was German at the time of the execution of this survey, in 1814.
Monogrammatic signature "FLC" (?) in the lower left corner.
