NORTH-EAST INDIA - PALACE PERIOD - 11°/12° CENTURY beautiful sculpture or stele in black stone (81 x 61 x 20 cm) depicting Siddharta Gautama, the historical Buddha, in Gandhara style, with a robe draped around him in the "Greek manner" and a serene facial expression. The Pala dynasty, which ruled over large parts of mostly northeast India from the 8th to 12th centuries and favored Buddhism, built an empire that extended northwest into the Gandhara Empire (in present-day northern Pakistan and Afghanistan). As a result, Pala sculpture was inevitably influenced by the well-known Gandhara style of Buddhist art, which developed from Greek, Syrian, Persian and Indian sculptural traditions. Considering that only from the 10th century onwards did clothing, jewelry and background decoration make their appearance in Pala sculptures, the origin of this sculpture is situated in the 11th/12th century || 11th/12th Cent. north-east Indian Pala period Gandhara style "Siddharta Gautam" sculpture/stele in black hardstone with a "Greek" draped cloth and a serene facial expression In view of the fact that clothing, jewelery and background decorations were not introduced to the Pala sculptures until the 10th century, the origin of this image can be traced back to the 11th/12th century
