MALACHITE PLATED GUERIDON Probably Russian work
About 1830-1840
Gilded and patinated bronze; malachite

This pedestal table is crowned with a thick malachite top, highlighted by a gilt bronze belt with a Greek motif and an elegant tripod base in bronze with two patinas. The three curved legs are articulated around a triangular spacer, centered by a medallion, through gilded bronze palmettes that stand out on the brown patina.
Malachite, "green gold" extracted from the mines of the Urals, was used in Russian imperial furniture from the end of the 18th century. Russian furniture craftsmen made a specialty of this kind of malachite pedestal table, mounted in gilt bronze (fig. 1).
