Pair of porcelain pots from Japan, imari, 18th century Gilt bronze mountings, some restored and others replaced, some with flowers
H. 25.5 cm ; D. 24.5 cm
The establishment of the Dutch East India Company in Japan in the 17th century heralded the golden age of Imari porcelain, produced in the Fizen province and exported to Europe from the eponymous port. The three-colored decoration of blue, red and gold was particularly appreciated in the European courts. This process is characterized by the quality of its paste and the richness of its abundant ornamentation.
The traditional Japanese forms were adapted to Western uses. The handle mount allowed for practical use on the table where the porcelain was used, for example, as an ice bucket.
