Our painting is to be compared with the Equestrian portrait of Maximilian III of Bavaria signed and dated 175.. (canvas, 78,5 x 61 cm) kept in the Ettal Abbey (see P. Laurentius Koch OSB, Georges Desmarées. Neufunde zu seinem Werk, in Weltkunst, 19, October 1992, p. 2721). Our model wears the cord of the Golden Fleece, the cord and the cross of the Order of St. George of Bavaria.
