ATTRIBUTE TO GILLES GARCIN (1947-1702) LOTH AND HIS DAUGHTERS Canvas enlarged with a 2 cm strip on the edges Attr. to G. Garcin, Loth and his daughters, canvas enlarged with a 3/4 in. strip on the edges 130 x 182 cm - 51,2 x 71,7 in. Born in 1647 into a family of merchants from Aix, Gilles Garcin began his apprenticeship in Avignon in the studio of the painter Nicolas Mignard and continued it with Pierre II Mignard when Nicolas Mignard left Avignon for Paris. In 1664 Gilles Garcin leaves his native Provence to join the Academy of Saint-Luc in Rome. It was not until the year of his second marriage, in 1670, that the first known work of the painter appeared; the Portrait of the late Brother Jean Villeneuve, acquired by the Confrérie des Pénitents bleus de Saint-Joachim. Gilles Garcin is also known for his larger works, such as his paintings for the chapel of the White Penitents of the Observance, in 1675. It is at this period that the artist seems to find his own style. The same year, he left for Rome and stayed there for a few months before returning to Aix, where his reputation only grew. Indeed, his commissions multiplied and spread from Aix to the hinterland and to Haute-Provence. In 1678, the Pénitents Noirs commissioned him to paint a ceiling, which has now disappeared, and then a series of seven paintings in 1682 on the theme of the Old Testament, including the Dream of Jacob and Joshua Stopping the Sun. Our composition can be compared to a painting by Gilles Garcin, Narcissus in a landscape (canvas, 63 x 76,5 cm) which appeared at the anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, March 19, 1999 (Me Laurin), n°35.
