EUGÈNE DELACROIX (CHARENTON SAINT-MAURICE 1798-PARIS 1863) VALMONT Watercolor on paper Stamp of the studio (L. 838a) lower left, annotated with pencil on the back: "Cours d'eau traversant/une prairie" 10 x 18,5 cm - 3,9 x 7,3 in. Delacroix's uncle, Nicolas Bataille, had an estate in Valmont, near Fécamp in Normandy. Delacroix liked to go there, he stayed there nine times from 1813 to 1850. It is also where he made many sketches and watercolors of the coast and its surroundings. Here the flat tints of color are voluntarily light, as it is probably a sketch made during one of his walks. The Galerie Brame et Lorenceau has confirmed the authenticity of this work which is referenced in their archives.
