CHENU (A.), Les conspirateurs, Les sociétés secrètes, La préfecture de police sous Caussidière, Les corps-francs, Garnier Frères, Paris, 1850. In-12 in contemporary half-basane, spine ribbed, title page (traces of use). (Slight freckles). Date of the original, but more than 12 editions of this volume were published at this date! The author, a conspirator by profession, took part in all the insurrections since 1832 and was well known to the police. In 1844, he narrowly avoided a court martial for desertion. In 1847 he was involved in the firebomb conspiracy; he managed to avoid arrest but was sentenced in absentia. His co-defendants having accused him of being in league with the police, he took refuge in Holland until 1848. After the February Revolution, he became a captain of Caussidière's guards, who quickly suspected him of being in league with Marrast's special police force; he was then sent to Belgium and Germany.
