2 vols. in-12 contemporary marbled calf, spine ornamented, landscape sketch in pencil on the last page of volume 1 (headbands worn, corners rubbed and some spotting).
First edition which will be republished after the Revolution, but reworked in the Fragmens de politique et d'histoire. With the publication of this book, Mercier approaches for the first time directly the political field. He considers necessary and urgent to establish a modern representative regime, but refuses the idea of popular sovereignty as a form of government.
A good copy.
