MEMENTO MORI - [ALLEGORY OF DEATH] - BOUCHARDON - "Death". c.1800-1810. Etching and burin after a drawing by Jacques-Philippe Bouchardon (1711-1753), by Jean AUBERT (1680-1741). Proof on wove paper. In Paris, at Jean, rue Jean de Beauvais n°10. Engraving representing a skull in the center surrounded by books, a scythe, a bell, a fallen candle and an apron (symbols of death). One of the open books displays the text of the Dies Irae, a medieval Latin hymn describing the Day of Judgment. Inscription under the skull: "Remember that you are only dust, and that you will return to dust". 31,5 x 42,5 cm. Condition B (a restored tear in the lower margin slightly reaching the tablet, some light marginal foxing).
