Rahel and Jacob
Oil on oak. Parquet.
80 x 120 cm.
The depiction is based on the first book of Genesis 28:10-11.
Rachel was traveling with her father's sheep, she wants to water them by the water of a well, but it is closed by a stone. Jacob helps her move this stone so that the sheep can drink. He then kisses Rachel in greeting and tells her who he is. Rachel can be seen in a red, partly embroidered long robe, with a white blouse, holding a shepherd's crook in her right hand. She is embraced by Jacob, who kisses her in greeting. On the left in the foreground her sheep to be tended, while in the background on the left is the well from which Jacob has removed the stone. Painterly depiction of a popular biblical theme in art history, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. (13403521) (18)
