House altar triptych Center panel: 69 x 48 cm. Side panels: 69 x 21 cm each. Verso note with former ownership indication: "Eigendom van Edmond Charles en Leonie Hinckens, Ommeganckstraat 32 Antwerpen". Antwerp, c. 1530/40. Folding altar of a house chapel in the form of a three-part altar retable. The center panel at the top with curved extension and small round-arched finial, the side panels correspondingly curved at the top. The frames are ebonized. The depictions of the three panels complement each other to form a narrative - beginning with the carrying of Christ to the cross on the left, the Calvary scene in the center, and the Entombment on the right. The scenic background continues - in refractions - in the three images. The left panel shows Jesus under the weight of the cross, between tormenting servants, as well as a horn-blower in a turban, behind it the Three Marys in front of a city gate of Jerusalem. The main image shows Jesus on the cross between the two shepherds, behind them a group of horsemen, against the background of the lower city of Jerusalem with walls and towers. To the side of the cross the assistant figures of the Three Marys and John the Evangelist, at the left edge of the picture. Magdalene kneels praying at the foot of the cross, in front of her the anointing vessel. On the right two male figures with turban, shield and armor. The man dressed in red probably means Joseph of Arimathea. The right wing shows two men placing the body of Jesus in a sarcophagus, behind them Mary and John. The painting style in its details, such as the ornamented oval shield in the middle picture or the ointment vessel, already shows a creation around or after 1530. The manneristic postures, especially of the thieves, correspond to this. In the upper excerpt, God the Father appears in bright light above clouds, with a papal crown, which indicates that the house altar was commissioned in the Catholic Franco-Flemish region. A.R.
