Narrative depiction about the martyrdom of the saint: in the foreground kneeling John the Baptist with bare torso and a red cloak around his hips. He has put his hands together devoutly and turns to a priest also kneeling in front of him in white robe, who wears individual-looking facial features. Behind John, a man is swinging his sword wide in order to behead the kneeling man. Standing at the left edge of the picture, Salome with a large pewter plate, waiting for the severed head. In the right background, several steps lead to the interior of a palace. Standing behind a table covered with white cloth, Herod with white turban surrounded by a festive party, to whom just by Salome the cut off head of John is presented on the table. Outside the room to the left various buildings of the palace complex. Painting in the typical manner of the time, in restrained coloring. (13403038) (18)
