Altarpiece depicting six apostles Oil on wood. Incl. original framing: 168 x 84 cm. The original framing with red version preserved. The vertical panel painting can be recognized as part of a larger altar context. The line of the landscape background rising to the upper right shows that it is the right part of a probably three-winged altarpiece. Six of the twelve apostles are shown, standing close together as a group, with their respective attributes: Thus, the youthful figure in front with chalice can be recognized as John the Evangelist, Andrew with St. Andrew's cross on the left, Bartholomew with a knife on the right, Thomas with a protractor behind him, Simon with a saw and Matthew with a halberd. The figure on the upper right is cut from the edge of the picture and can no longer be identified. Nimbus panels with gold background. On the reverse side remains of former relief painting. Fine shrinkage crack in the center. The color composition is concentrated on the red in John's dress and complementary to it the green in the clothing of the adjacent figures. Corresponding to this is the landscape in the upper section of the picture, which shows a rock also leaning to the right between delicate trees, as a symbol of the "rock" of the church in the growing Christianity. The painting style reveals a closeness to Baegert. This famous master, who maintained an extensive workshop and brought about a rich succession, was under Flemish, Rhenish, but also Westphalian influence. In 1475 he was commissioned by Duke Johann I of Cleves to paint the high altar in the church of the Dominicans in Dortmund, where he left his self-portrait. A.R.
