Saint Sebastian, probably Brussels around 1480 Oil on canvas. Doubled. 64 x 48 cm. Three-quarter depiction of the saint in shining armor with cloak and large golden nimbus, holding a bow in his right hand and several arrows in the other. He has a narrow nose, finely arched eyebrows and with his dark eyes he looks down thoughtfully sideways. He is standing in front of a hanging, valuable cloth of honor with a red and white border, behind which a wall can be seen at the side with a landscape behind it. Note: Sebastian (born around 288 in Rome) was a Roman soldier and captain at the imperial court. Because he publicly professed Christianity, he was sentenced to death and Emperor Diocletian had him shot by archers. He survived, but was later slain. (1340307) (18) Flemish master, 15th century SAINT SEBASTIAN, PROBABLY BRUSSELS CA. 1480 Oil on canvas. Relined. 64 x 48 cm.
