The first five photos are portraits of high court officials, designated by name and function, such as prince, minister of finance, vice-president of the council of the empire, grand chamberlain-minister of the emperor's household; the other 45 represent, for 23 of them, views of the "Tartar city" of Peking, such as the southern bastion of the city and the southern walls, the "Chinese city", the French legation, the surroundings of Peking, the entrances to the Forbidden City; the 22 others, portraits of various characters, including soldier of the imperial house, old women, chair bearers, strolling barber, mandarin, opium smoker, Tartar woman, strolling sausage maker, chess players, musicians, monk, merchant, schoolmaster.
