The Hermit or the Distribution of the Rosaries
Oil on panel.
Wooden frame and gilded stucco.
47 x 57,5 cm
Provenance :
On the reverse side an old handwritten label in pen and brown ink from the 19th century, traces the provenance of the work from the " Cabinet de Mr.
Tailly " (?), until 1839 : " This painting of a hermit giving a rosary to a rosary girl is by J.
B. Greuze. It was bought 12 000 pounds in 1786 at an exhibition by the prince of L (...) who made a gift of it to Madame Michel his mistress and the wife of his steward. This lady Michel left it in her will to Mr Achille (?) de Mainville whom she had named her executor. Mr de Mainville was a member of the Prince's household.
He left it at his death to Mr. Rollin (Gabriel) his nephew who sold it to me (...) in June 1839".
